I have come across many posts, questions, and queries regarding this from students, asking whether paying for internships is worth it? To address this question common to all students I thought of writing an article.
It is a common misbelief among the students' community that paying for an internship program is not worth and it will be a training program rather than a real project work. To understand this I'll briefly tell you the points why organizations charge money for internship programs:
To get a commitment from students, since one has paid he will stick more and try to get the most out of the value for money.
To bear the cost of resources to be utilized during the program in engaging the students,
To remunerate the professionals of their organizations in order to provide dedicated and fulfilling engagement.
To organize training programs for the interns before starting off with the project work.
Now that you have understood the motive behind organizations charging money for the internship. Following are the points why you should pay for getting into an internship program:
These internship programs will give you better on job training than any other program or just a training program.
Nobody in the market gives intern the dedicated and full-fledged working experience, interns are always the trainees and they get trained, so paying for on job training will give the maximum output since you have paid for the service and it's your right to get the most out of it.
Organizations charging nothing and not even giving stipends are less committed towards the Internship programs since they have no obligations towards the interns and towards the training.
Stipend based internships are very less in the market and only the exceptional students are selected through rigorous selection processes. If you know that you are not falling under that category it's always better to opt for a paid internship program to take your skillsets towards practical project experience.
Saying so that paid internships are not bad and help the individual achieve greater targets, what kind of paid internship programs should you consider:
Avoid only training programs, where students are just taught and given a certificate of internship, no practical projects, or no other experience is given.
Avoid the only project works, internships are meant for on-job training if you are expected to complete just project in order to get a certificate you should avoid such internships since your personal development will be at stake and at the end to complete the program organizations might complete it by themselves and wave you goodbye with the letter.
Identify internships where equal weightage will be given on training and to the project under a mentor.
Opt for internship programs through well-recognized organizations that are registered Pvt. Ltd. or Public companies, recognized by the Government of India, and have strong partnerships with other organizations.
To conclude I would advise students to not get confused with internships as job opportunities and try not to focus only on stipend based internships since the situation is not good at this juncture due to COVID-19 and existing employees are facing layover and salary cut-offs so it would be really hard to get into such internships, but the bright side is many startups are booming and they are willing to offer projects to students, one should consider these opportunities and make the most out of the work from home culture.
As a student focus more on learning and gaining experience instead of earning money and getting paid for work since you have to do that life long once your education is over.
